Saturday Night

Saturday Night

A Musical by Stephen Sondheim
Directed by Linda Weilkotz

Studio Players, located at 14 Alvin Place in Upper Montclair, New Jersey, will present Stephen Sondheim's first musical "Saturday Night. This rarely done gem of a musical was written in 1954, but never appeared on stage due to the untimely death of its producer. The show remained under wraps until the spring of 2000, when it appeared Off Broadway.

The show is typical early Sondheim, similar to other musicals of its era, with catchy, toe tapping tunes and ballads such as "One Wonderful Day," "That Kind of Neighborhood," and "One Moment With You."

The story takes place in Flatbush, Brooklyn, 1929, before the stock market crash. It follows a young man named Gene and his friends who want nothing more than to have a date on a Saturday Night. Unlike his friends, however, Gene longs to make his mark and become rich in Manhattan. He talks his friends into investing in the stock market and uses the money as a down payment on a luxury apartment. The trouble begins when he tries to figure out how to give the money back.

This is a crowd pleaser that even non-Sondheim fans will enjoy. If you enjoy an old fashioned musical love story, or you are simply looking for a fun evening out, "Saturday Night" is for you.

The show runs October 10 through 25 on Thursday, Friday, Saturday nights at 8PM, Sunday matinees at 3PM. Tickets are $18. To order tickets call the box office at 973-744-9752.
