The story is set over a hundred years ago in Denmark. It is the story of a young girl that has been tricked by a gypsy scoundrel into taking the magic red shoes as a gift. The minute she puts them on she begins to dance incessantly. The shoes cannot be removed except by the scoundrel and the girl is forced to dance for the crowds in the street. Finally she is saved by the kind acts of a clown.
